Congrats to MENDAKI on its 30th birthday!
Attended the celebration at Shangri-La Hotel this evening.
MENDAKI has served the Malay/Muslim community well, especially by improving educational performance and promoting the gotong royong (self-help) spirit. It has played a big part in the community's progress.
Was happy to meet Mrs Ridzwan Dzafir and her family, who were there for the launch of the Ridzwan Dzafir Community Award. I knew Pak Ridzwan for many years, beginning when he was Director General (Trade) and I worked with him in MTI. It is fitting to honour him through this award, and encourage a younger generation to emulate his example of leadership and service.
Also glad to meet many young people who are volunteering with MENDAKI, or have benefitted from MENDAKI programmes, or often both. Quite a few performed for us this evening, including Riduan Zalani, an amazingly talented percussionist with his band, who received the Goh Chok Tong Youth Promise Award. The Govt will continue to support MENDAKI and the MMOs. Do step forward to take full advantage of the programmes and funding to serve the community, and help Malay/Muslims to continue upgrading and improving. – LHL
